"I love my partner and plan to share my life fully with that person until physical death.
Why should we get the State involved by having a legal wedding and filing for a marriage/civil union license?"
Reverend Freeman often engages lovers in this conversation.
Yes, that is a valid question.
True, legally wedding is not for all.
For most people, a legal joining is the simplest way to ensure receiving all the legal rights and benefits of such a couple.
MARRIAGE -- being legally married/civilly united -- is often a key requirement to enjoying many benefits under the law.
This is especially true for residents of States, including Hawaii, which do not recognize "common law marriage."
3 circumstances Reverend Freeman cites relying on such marital benefits are:
• Sharing ownership of wealth and real property such as a house;
• Raising children together;
• Emergency situations such as hospitalization visitation.
Yes, it is true that other legal procedures and documents, including living wills, last will and testaments and corporations, may provide many of these desired privileges.
For most, marriage is the simplest solution.
"Why should we legally wed?"
LOVE -- is the number one answer!
For most couples, LOVE is also the most important reason.
Love may persist regardless of wedding, but many legal rights, which the couple deserves, go away without a legal marriage/civil union license.

For a marriage to be valid, section 572-1(7), Hawaii Revised Statutes, requires that the marriage ceremony be performed in the State by a person or society with a valid license to solemnize marriages and the parties to be married and the person performing the marriage ceremony all be physically present at the same place and time for the marriage ceremony.
